This collapsible plastic product was designed to hold a specified load when in use. The previous design was rather bulky and unable to be manufactured, so a redesign was performed to address these issues. Draft angles were tweaked to allow the part to be removed from a mold. Material was then removed from various low-stress areas to give the product a more aesthetic look and reduce material cost.
To ensure the new design could withstand the specified load, a stress study was performed. This allowed us to add material to high stress areas while removing material in the low stress areas.
In the end, we were able to make a manufacturable product with a better aesthetic look and a 40% reduction in material.
