Project 3: Shobra Tower
Based on the request of the owner of Shobra Tower (Mr. Milad Shenoda) located in 317 Shoubra St., Cairo,
Egypt to study the possibility of adding two upper floors above the building. The building is considered
commercial and residential(See image below). Hundreds of employees working in the building, along with
residents, are permanently present in the building.
This project is considered a real challenge, and it was necessary to study its structural safety first to find out
whether it is able to bear the current loads or not. It was found from the study that it is constructively safe,
but the problem is if the reinforced concrete floors are added , it may affect its bearing capacity. So I took a
decision to add steel floors(consists of steel columns, steel beams, composite beams & composite slab )
instead of concrete ones, due to its light weight compared to concrete(See to images below).
I have designed the following stories:
1- The three added steel floors above the building: Cross-section of each steel member is shown in the
below image.
I have checked the following items:
1- I have checked the capacity of existing concrete columns : All the lower columns of the building
bearing the added steel stories are SAFE. Capacity Ratio appears of each column < 1 ,…. OK
2- I have checked the contact pressure under raft foundation: Max pressure under raft < bearing capacity
of soil, hence >>>OK
3- I have checked also the seismic capacity of the building after adding the three added steel floors. The
whole building experienced good seismic performance under pushover analysis using Csi ETABS.
