Project 8 Structural Assessment Analysis & Design of the New Created Upper Floor Inside the Main Hall of the University (Hassan Al Sheikh Hall) Hassan All Sheikh Main Hall, King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia Structural System: Steel frames and composite Slabs The old main system was steel frames. The reason behind the university’s request to make a structural evaluation of this hall is the creation of the upper floor(hall) inside the main old hall (as a mezzanine floor). Not allow any internal columns to be built so as not to obstruct the view and movement in the ground hall, this was the real challenge to me. And so I created an unconventional structural style, which is to make composite floor by group of main & secondary steel beams(wide flange sections) supported on the main steel frames and overhang steel columns, as shown in the following figures. My decision is considered the easiest solution regarding the build and cheaper in cost compared to other designs which were submitted by famous consulting bureaus in Saudi Arabia. The used software for analysis & design was Csi ETABS V. 9.7.0 and the used US code was AISC ASD 89.
