Abide University
PhD, Metaphysics
2007 – 2015
A study in philosophy that explores the fundamental nature of reality, existence, and the relationship between mind and matter. A typical metaphysics course will cover several core areas:
1. Ontology: The study of being and existence. Students explore questions like “What does it mean to exist?” and examine the different categories of being, including the nature of objects, properties, space, and time.
2. Identity and Change: This part of metaphysics looks at questions of personal and object identity over time. Key questions include: “What does it mean for something to remain the same despite changes?” and “What constitutes identity over time?”
3. Causality and Free Will: Students study the nature of cause and effect, asking, “What does it mean for one thing to cause another?” and explore debates surrounding determinism versus free will and whether humans have true agency.
4. Mind-Body Problem: This area examines the relationship between mind and matter, exploring whether the mind is distinct from the body, how consciousness arises, and the nature of mental states.
5. Possibility and Necessity: Often called modal metaphysics, this branch looks into possible worlds and the nature of necessity versus contingency, asking, “What could exist?” versus “What must exist?”
6. God and the Divine: Many metaphysics courses cover the philosophical questions surrounding the concept of God, the nature of divinity, and arguments for and against the existence of a higher power.
7. Space and Time: Students explore the nature of space and time, including the questions of whether time is linear, the nature of past and future, and if space and time are absolute or relational.
8. Metaphysical Methodologies: Finally, students study the different approaches and frameworks philosophers use to analyze and build metaphysical arguments, including logical reasoning, conceptual analysis, and thought experiments.
The goal of a metaphysics course is to engage students in critical thinking about these abstract concepts, encouraging them to question assumptions and build a foundational understanding of reality from a philosophical perspective.
