Landscape Architecture Designer
Last updated: Dec 21, 2024
What's the difference between a landscape architect and a landscape artist? The former takes care of the science, while the latter handles the art. Well, not quite. Art is as much part of both landscape architecture and design, but the people handling the job are distinguished based on their academic levels and licensing.
For an individual to qualify as a landscape architect, they must have a bachelor’s or master's degree in landscape architecture and has a state license that will authorize them to design and work on landscape projects. Without the state license, an individual only falls in the category of a landscape designer.
Landscape architecture aims to achieve environmental, aesthetic and social behavior enhancements through the design of outdoor public areas, structures, and landmarks. Before any landscape design is made, there must be a systematic investigation of existing soil, social, and ecological conditions which will influence the landscape process and the need for design interventions to produce the desired outcome.
Some of the most famous examples of landscape architecture in the Western world are the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, the Stourhead in Wiltshire, England, and the Orangery at the Palace of Versailles, located just outside of Paris.
As a multi-disciplinary field, the scope of landscape architecture includes landscape design, parks and recreation planning, environmental restoration, storm water management, green infrastructure planning and provision, and private estate and residence landscape master planning and design. Project scope is often large scale and incorporates aspects of fine arts, industrial design, architecture, botany, horticulture, soil sciences, geography, ecology and environmental psychology.
