Hi there! My name is Kevin Moreno and I am currently a graduate student at Virginia Tech researching mechanical vibrations. Although vibrations research is my passion, I have spent countless hours modeling and designing mechanical systems on Solidworks and ANSYS for my own research, class projects, and processing 3D printing requests during my time working at Terrapin Works. One of my biggest accomplishments with 3D modeling and mechanical design was being the team lead for my senior design project. My team designed a lifting mechanism designed to help physically limited people put heavy items onto their shopping carts at the store. My team ultimately won 2nd place for best overall design out of over 30 design teams. 3D modeling and mechanical design is my bread and butter. I am a Mechanical Engineering student at Bogazici University, one of the top notch universities of Turkey, with a current CGPA of 3.28, and I will study Mechanical Engineering M.Sc. at the same university starting from September 2018. My graduation project is about a vibrational energy harvester that is able to tune itself between 10-20 Hz and able to light up an LED. I have actively used Solidworks for 3D printing purposes, especially for my graduation project. I have designed a PLA spacer in order to direct compression forces from top to the bottom, and limit the deformation of the objects on top and bottom. Then I have used ANSYS Static Structural module to analyze static and fatigue behaviour of the system under the compression forces. Furthermore, I have used Eigenvalue Buckling module to make buckling analysis of negative stiffness beams used in my project, and Modal module in order to match the natural frequencies of the resonance modes of piezoelectric buzzer materials used in my project. I have used CATIA in order to design the steering wheel of Electrotype I, which is a Shell Eco Marathon Concept Battery Electric competition car made by the engineering team BuAlert(Bogazici University Alternative Racing Team). By measuring the dimensions of hands of our driver, and considering the visibility issues inside the car, the steering wheel is parametrically designed so that the curvature of rim of the steering wheel changes according to the position of the steering wheel hub. I am an automotive engineer and I currently work in a company that manufacturing various machine parts for defence industriy in Turkey. Therefore, we make technical drawings and we realizes of this drawings manufacturing. I can use solidworks, catia, Ansys static structural and ansys modal analysis programs on a professional level. Since I can use ansys which is an analysis program, I can do engineering analysis of your 3d models. I can calculate vibration frequencies, tensile stresses, compression stresses and bending stresses of your 3D models. Two academic papers of mine were published. Computational Methodology to Solve Reactions for Statically Indeterminate Beams on Flexible Mounts -The computational methodology was sorted out to solve the reaction forces on 4 and 6 axles vehicle. -Already available analytical approaches were studied: Elastic Curve Equation, Three-Moment Equation, and Beams on Elastic Foundation. - Experimental Rig setup was devised and results were compared with the computational methodology. - A research paper of this study was published in IBCAST-2016 Conference. b. FEA Study of Crane Out trigger Mat -Developed a finite element analysis procedure for simulation of stiffness behavior of foundations under large-scale loads. -The study was required for criteria building of ATPs for safe handling of the crane and its outriggers. -It was also published in the International Conference on Structural Dynamics & Vibrations (ICSDV-2014). c. Mathematical Modeling of 8 Axle Vehicle Steering - Mathematical modeling in MATLAB/SIMULINK for an eight- axle steering system to simulate the behavior while turning for 6DOF Steward Platform Motion Simulator. Structural Mechanics We evaluate the structural integrity of your structures and mechanical components. Product design validation can be subject to several loads and boundary conditions criteria: external, cyclic, thermal, strain/displacement, and quasi-static loads and boundary conditions, just to name a few. Industry is reality, and reality is nonlinear: large deformations, elasto-plastic behaviour, contact and friction are all within reach of our modelling capabilities. Dynamics & Vibrations When inertial forces become prevalent because of the motion change of the examined body, dynamical investigations and checks are inevitable. In our harmonic and modal analyses in the frequency domain the frequency response of the loaded structure can be evaluated. However, there are many underlying issues that can occur before the probed system reaches its desired steady state. Transient dynamic analyses aid in assessing the behaviour in the time domain. Stress fields upon impact are also part of our dynamics toolbox. Computational Fluid Dynamics Nowadays, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been growing rapidly within the engineering era. Instead of building prototypes, we can evaluate the performance of a new design purely based on computational simulations. The CFD does not only provide qualitative results but can produce quantitative results as well, if done properly. With the CFD simulations we can investigate the thermal-hydraulic behavior of heat exchangers, the loss of different pipe systems, the aerodynamic drag of moving objects and the churning loss of gears in oil lubrications, just to name a few.
