Experience

  • Project Engineer, P.E. Barghausen Engineering, Inc. · Full-time Feb 2020 – Present 5 yrs 1 mos Kent, WA, United States I have experience in a range of civil engineering projects, with a primary focus on large-scale industrial site developments and re-developments in Western Washington. However, I have also undertaken design work for private and public civil engineering projects in Oregon, Tennessee, and California. As part of my role, I successfully managed a team of 2-4 Design Engineers, overseeing their work and ensuring project deliverables were met.

One area of expertise for me is stormwater design. I have conducted extensive work in this field, including tasks such as WWHM calculations, conveyance analysis, and pond/infiltration sizing. I have written comprehensive reports on stormwater management, SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan), and flood studies. Using the latest techniques and software, such as Civil 3D, I have designed stormwater systems, employing efficient and modern approaches.

In addition to my design responsibilities, I have also played a key role in improving efficiency and accuracy in conveyance calculations. By developing innovative methods, I have significantly enhanced the speed and precision of these calculations, streamlining the overall design process.

Furthermore, I have been involved in a Civil 3D focus group aimed at enhancing drafting standards and methods. Collaborating with other professionals, we have worked to improve the software's capabilities and maximize its potential for creating high-quality engineering designs.

Effective communication and coordination are crucial aspects of my work. I regularly interact with clients, contractors, architects, and subconsultants to ensure smooth workflow and meet project deadlines. This involves regular updates, clarifications, and aligning everyone's efforts towards achieving project objectives.
  • Engineering Technician Adkins Consulting Engineering, LLC. · Full-time Dec 2016 – Feb 2020 3 yrs 2 mos Klamath Falls, OR, United States My experience at Adkins has been very broad since Adkins is a small local firm, and has included drafting (Civil 3D), structural design, stormwater analysis, stream and river hydrology, irrigation engineering, site/civil design, specification preparation, structural special inspections, field/lab materials testing, proposal preparation, and recruiting. I also manage all testing and structural inspections for the company.

My ability to think through complex problems and work with the team to find optimal solutions has made me a valuable asset to the company. I enjoy brainstorming the problems from the pre-engineering phase, then outlining a process to formulate the best approach. Due to the broad nature of the work I've done, I have also learned many programs including Civil 3D (including Hydrology and Express programs), HEC-RAS, EPANet, SWMM, RISA. I also have a high level of ability in MS Excel including macros, which has strongly contributed to my work.

A primary duty of my job was to read and understand plans and specifications for projects as well as to communicate with contractors. My experience in this area and attention to detail led to my promotion to lead structural inspector. I lead a team of about four employees who conduct most of the field work, some of which I still do myself for more complex projects and tests. We have had a lot of positive feedback from many of our clients and company management since I took over the department, which has been a very satisfying experience.

I've had a great time at Adkins and enjoyed working with the team and our clients. The experience I gained at Adkins has been extremely valuable and I look forward to carrying the experience gained wherever I go.
  • Construction Cost Estimator Kiewit · Internship Jun 2016 – Oct 2016 4 mos Kapolei, HI, United States Duties included: Accurately estimate project costs for heavy civil work, read/interpret plans and specifications, model earthwork in Trimble HCE and AGTEK, operate Hard Dollar estimating program, and model in AutoCAD.

The experience I gained at Kiewit was very valuable, and I became an integral part of the team after a few short months. I spent my time there finding solutions to construction operations/sequencing in order to accurately estimate the cost of doing the work. Many of the problems were solved using 3D modeling, for which I learned two programs (Trimble HCE, and AGTEK). As the only person in the office able to proficiently used both, I became relatively popular as a team member and got sent with some of the senior team to help bid on a $70 million project in San Diego. Unfortunately, I didn't get much time in the field due to my increasingly important role in the office.

Overall, Kiewit is a great company and I was very lucky to work with the team there. I learned a lot about what contractors want to see in plans and specifications, as well as the things that make the jobs constructable. I have worked to incorporate all the things I learned from Kiewit in my designs to ensure they're practical and cost-effective.
  • Transportation Logistics Analyst Roseburg Forest Products · Internship Jun 2015 – Oct 2015 4 mos Dillard, OR, United States Duties Included: Improve efficiency of truck fleet, decrease cost of product transfers, upgrade dispatch processes, write standard operating procedures, improve safety of operation.

The job at Roseburg Forest Products was certainly a unique and beneficial experience. As the only intern in the transportation department, it was my job to identify and solve inefficiencies and improve the general operations of the company truck and forklift fleet. This internship was very flexible and the allowed me to find my own ways of finding ways to save the company time and money in their operations. The first month was spent with truck drivers (certainly an interesting experience) in order to help determine inefficiencies. After analyzing the data and talking to people directly related to the work, I worked with management and cmgit spoke procedures changed. Overall, we estimated savings of over $100k annually due to the changes made.
  • Assitant Operator Jeld-Wen · Full-time Oct 2013 – Oct 2014 1 yrs Klamath Falls, OR, United States Duties Included: Work 12-hour night shifts, grade door-skins for quality; perform maintenance; help prevent/fight fires; perform tests on skins; input information onto Excel; complete daily reports; solve quality and production issues, work as safety committee member.

I spent 6 years at Jeld-Wen, 3 in Oregon, 2 in England, and 1 more in Oregon while going back to college. Though this work experience does not specifically pertain to jobs I'm currently seeking, the value of my time here cannot be understated. Jeld-Wen is where I discovered that I could work very hard and could push myself beyond what most people would consider. I spend most of my time at Jeld-Wen working 12-hour night shifts while also taking classes at OIT, resulting in 0-4 hous of sleep most days. Even with those challenges, I managed to do very well at both work and college, maintaining a perfect 4.0 at OIT during that time.

While I did enjoy my time there, I learned primarily that I have to spend my life doing something that I'm passionate about, and I could work in a factory my whole life, I'm just too interested in physics, engineering, and solving massive important challenges.
