Description:
The task at hand is to find an economic low cost method to manufacture and upholster adult dental chair soft goods. Quality and life of covering must be robust, 10+ year life. The dental chair soft goods typically consist of three major components; underlying support structure, many times this is a vacuum formed plastic element, the seat foam, and the upholstery itself (see attached photos). Dental chairs are normally divided into two main components; 1) The back structure, 2) The seating structure. Key to this design initiative, should include an alternate way of securing the leather to the underside of the chair. Most chairs currently utilize hundreds of staples to secure the fabric, this poses to problems: 1) High direct labor, 2) No way to easily replace the upholstery covering. We are seeking a new innovative design ideas for new methods of manufacture without using staples or typical snap fittings.
Wants:
Estimated manufacturing costs, amount of direct labor, innovation.
Software:
  1. SolidWorks (2013)
  2. Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop

Hi RickG.
I would like to request if you can extend the contest for 1 more week. I will be able to share my concept whitin that timeframe. I&;m guessing since you didn&;t receive too many submittions you won&;t have any trouble doing that. I&;m sure many other designers are looking forward to the opportunity to submit their concept as well.

Thanks, Pablo.

Reply to Abertus Putra: Albertus, velcro may be a problem as the chair gets so many uses, that fabric could pull or get dislodged easily. However, you are on the right track, we are absolutely looking for multiple solutions.

Justin Logan: Hi, thanks for your interest. To answer your question "Can you tell me a little more about what you are expecting as an output?" As stated in our design description, we are seeking new innovative low cost design ideas and/or methods of manufacture without using staples or typical snap fittings to construct dental chair upholstery components . Output does not need to be CAD, could be hand sketches, renderings, etc. Need new low cost (low assembly labor) method to construct dental chair seats and backs. Upholstery attachment method should allow easy removal and replacement of fabric portion of chair if it begins to wear or get damaged. Does this answer your question?

Entry : Although an interesting design, I have the following concerns: 1) I&;m not sure this is a low cost method. 2) I am also concerned that the fabric will slip over time. 3) It has a high profile and most likely would be visible.

this is indeed an interesting contest, let&;s come up with different solutions,
I think to secure the fabric we can use velcro (hook and loop fasteners)
We can sew the fabric together with velcro, and place the counterpart on the frame

Can you tell me a little more about what you are expecting as an output? Are you looking to getting CAD for a system of how to attach the trim to the structure, or are you looking for CAD for the entire seat structure, foam and trim? I fear this would take significantly longer than 1 month.
Are you expecting the person you award the work to, to do the manufacturing as well, or are you intending on sourcing a more local business?

Bas Relief Panels
Create bas relief panel models to be CNC routed from MDF sheet. I will provide exact panel dimensions, sketches of the design and images to be modeled. Photos of similar examples attached.
create a parametric CAD model
I have a 3d model of an upright that was produced using topology optimisation software. The optimised model provided must be used as a guide to create a parametric CAD model. The optimised solution will be provided as a solid works file and I will require the finished CAD model as a SolidWorks file. I will also provide the original upright design so that you can use it as a reference when creating the new design I will need the job done by the 15th of october
Engineering design: extending foundation pile support
3 different components need to join together to form 1 piece. The combined assembly is a clamp on system, that clamps onto 36" diameter pipe, then when hydraulic pistons are activated the arms extend and lock out to approximately 45deg. I have attached schematics showing in 2d what I am after. Potential for significant future work for winning designer.
