Tekla Designer
Last updated: Dec 21, 2024
Tekla is a software company that carries four different types of applications for detailing, analysis, and design, and project communication. These are Tekla Structures, Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, and Tekla BIMsight. Each of these programs has specific functions that can be part of a whole. A freelance Tekla designer would know how to take advantage of the potential of each piece of software to ensure project success.
Trimble, a US-based technology company, is responsible for developing Tekla software. The name Tekla is derived from the Finnish words Teknillinen laskenta, which translates to technical computation, and abbreviated into Tekla.
Tekla Structures is a holistic building information modeling (BIM) software that takes into account the entire structural design process. From the design concept through to construction, every detail is covered in the program. As a 3D BIM software, it is used in the building and construction industries for concrete detailing, cast in-situ, precast and, steel detailing. 3D structural models in concrete or steel can be created and managed using the software, with guides that Tekla freelancers can use from concept to fabrication.
Tekla Structural Designer is for building analysis and design. Structural engineers who are focused on concrete and steel buildings use the application to analyze and design buildings.
Tekla Tedds takes out the hassle and stress associated with calculation, sketches, and notes in engineering projects, by automating repetitive civil and structural calculations. A freelance Tekla designer knowledgeable in Tekla Tedds will be able to crunch numbers without losing sleep over it.
Tekla BIMsight provides the missing link between BIM-based construction projects. Any model that is made from other BIM applications that use the IFC, DWG and DNG formats can be imported into Tekla BIMsight for design coordination checks. It aims to eliminate constructability and design issues that are best discovered and resolved in the design phase, so any costly construction mistakes can be avoided.
How does Tekla compare with AutoCAD?
Tekla is different from AutoCAD in the sense that it focuses on a specific aspect of a design rather than the entirety of it. Tekla structures, for instance, is best used when building steel and concrete structures, while AutoCAD is applicable to a wide range of design aspects.
Whether or not it is better than AutoCAD, or the best between the two options, greatly depends on the specific project and the designer. But if you know the project demands steel fabrication and steel-based construction, Tekla might work best.
