I am a Principle Mechanical Design Engineer based in Minneapolis, MN. I have over 25 years of product design experience and can make your ideas come to life in 3D. I own and operate a mechanical design services business. I have 11 US Patents My hourly rate may be a bit higher, but you get what you pay for! Your design is not a place to be cheap. I have been using Solidworks doing intensive design projects since 1997, and used other CAD systems for many years before that (in fact I started with a pencil and a drafting board). I am likely faster and more experienced than most, and can steer your design in the right direction so the parts are manufacturable and as inexpensive as possible.

For me, product design is not just about solving puzzles. It’s about connecting with people through the things we create and making a product that solves a problem in their lives. I love the process of bringing an idea or a product to the next level, whether I’m creating an industrial design to satisfy the market’s demands, a functional prototype to get people’s attention, or a mass-manufacturable model to bring down costs. In 2013 I bought my first 3D printer as a kit, and used it to start a small business called Mindforge Design. As part of Mindforge, I designed and sold Maryland-themed 3D printed items to the University of Maryland community. Eventually I built a printer of my own which evolved into Readybox, the fastest consumer 3D printer on the market at the time. Readybox had a successful Kickstarter campaign in late 2015, reaching and exceeding its funding goal in only 18 hours. Since graduating in 2017 with a BS in mechanical engineering I’ve been working as a mechanical engineer at Harbor Designs and Manufacturing, where I’ve designed mechanical systems and parts for a multitude of consumer products. I specialize in injection molding and sheet metal design, and in bringing a project from inception through production. Today you can find me designing new products in and out of work every day. With a background in both prototyping and the founding of small businesses, plus experience in product development, CAD design, and multiple types of mass manufacturing, I’m able to guide you through any step of the product design process.

Educated in ship design with a general interest in product design, I now work as the Design Director for Adventure Solutions; a company that designs, manufactures, and installs custom projects related to Ninja Warrior Courses, Aerial Ropes Courses, Climbing, Playgrounds, Ziplines, Family Entertainment Centers, and Sports Therapy. I am deeply interested in refining designs to their best forms given the project goals and limitations. I have years of CAD and Digital Modeling experience to take ideas from notes, measurements, and sketches to developing a complete digital representation of the intended product. I can then take this digital model to develop a product prototype using a variety of quick production tools such as 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, and mold making. My name is Nathan Dotts, and I am a Mechanical Engineer. I graduated from Brigham Young University Idaho and currently live in Indiana with my wife and two sons. I have industry experience in food, automotive, automation, and fabrication. My specialty is in the area of product design. I even started my own business, Mechanical Design and Fabrication (https://mechanicaldesignandfabrication.com), to help facilitate the process. We help others to design and fabricate their products. When desired, we can also help others to patent their design. Because of my business and previous experience, I have access to equipment such as machinery and software that aids in the engineering process. If you want something built, I can keep cost and time spent waiting on the lower end because I have the ability to do most everything in-house, all except the heaviest of fabrication processes.
